'Television Nonsense' & 'Media Lies'
...Can Lose Lives!
----------
Introduction As To What 'Television Nonsense' & 'Media Lives' Is All About
Examples Of 'Television Nonsense' & 'Media Lies'
----------
---From time to time I will be making comments about 'nonsense' statements often heard throughout the media (television, radio, newspapers, magazines, the internet, etc) relating to health, fitness, disease, aging, and whatever. The reasons for this 'misinformation' and 'utter nonsense' are numerous...and none of them good.
---For example, our society is so motivated by financial profit that a great deal of the less than scrupulous--through 'advertising' or under the guise of reporting the news or otherwise--might present 'untruths' or 'partial truths' (if there is such a thing) if it will help them sell a product or service or tell a story or whatever so as to make a buck!
---Or, some of these 'mistruths' might be perpetrated by people who know no better. Their intentions might be honorable, but their intellect or expertise on certain of these matters might be less than complete or less than accurate...and many times highly inaccurate. The end result though is the same...'mistruth' and 'utter nonsense.'
---Now you might say that one person's 'truth' is another persons's 'mistruth.' And I would tend to agree. Truth is often not absolute, and depending upon the nature of what is being said, it can vary from one person to another...or from one time or age to another. Remember, knowledge can and does change from time to time. For example, that which medical science might have reported to be 'true' or factual one year, might very well be proven not to be true the next year.
---And we can also say that when it comes to the media reporting all this sorts of misinformation and what might otherwise be considered to be lies, 'mistakes' can be made. But 'mistakes' or not, they can still be untrue and oftentimes harmful.
---Nevertheless, 'misinformation' that might be totally innocent in nature and otherwise well intentioned might also be more likely to be forgiven than when truth is purposely misrepresented. And I would agree. Intentional lies are reprehensible and unforgiveable, not an outright lie, but a negligent one!
---On the other hand, all too often people offer their 'information' or what they think are 'truths' of new facts in fields those people have little knowledge about, and wherein they are less than qualified to offer such information. To me that would be less forgiveable and even more likely to be a form of negligent misinformation.
---In other words, there are many different reasons why misinformation is so routinely being presented to the public. The part that really irks me though is when it is being done recklessly and wantonly and purposely primarily for the sake of making money. To me that's not excusable, and I can not tell you how much of the information disseminated by the various forms of media to the public comes under that heading...a great deal I would say, and more!
---Remember, newspapers and magazines and whatever have to have new and interesting stories to sell, otherwise they could be going out of business real soon. So why not thumb through some reputable medical journals or whatever, find an article or two with a new twist, for example, on an old problem, and present it anew? Then, depending upon the 'media clout' as to which media outlet did the initial presenting, the rest of the media jumps on the bandwagon and the whole country's reporting 'the story' as if it's 'the new gospel.'
---If you looking for a 'story,' you can almost always find something that could be presented as being 'diffferent' or whatever...but the fact is, that's just not the way 'medicine' works!
---...In 'medicine' there are always articles 'for' and 'against' this or that cure of this or that cancer or this or that disease or whatever. That's the way medicine works. Professionals usually scan and read through these articles and research papers over the years and average them out or whatever, or make reputable and knowledge-based judgements as to who wrote them or as to the circumstances under which they were written and as to a whole host of other factors. And they routinely do so, in turn, to help judge the reliability or validity of any particular article or research study or whatever, and even then they might come up only with an opinion, but might seem to be, even fact, to the less than knowledgeable or flippant writer looking for a story!
---In other words, through being 'less than scrupulous' or 'unknowldegeable' or a 'know it all,' or through ignorance or negligent enthusiasm to find a story, a particular article or research study or whatever is picked out and made to be 'the new truth,' to be repeated almost everywhere throughout the media. After all, can't let another newspaper or television show or whatever get the scoop!
---And then, before you know it, the very natue of medical thinking has changed, the very nature of medicine itself, and the medical decisions and judgments are no longer what is medically reliable, but seems to be stemming more so from what is financially profitable...and most people, all of the usually knowing no better-- even the 'higher ups' and the people making the laws---are being treated that new brand of 'unmedicine,' thinking, ironically, they are getting the best of care, when in fact it might be the undoing of their very lives!
---So, I will tell you, fact is, I too can make mistakes (however few they are likely to be and hopefully, not at all)...but I would also tell you that they will be just that, nothing more than unintentional mistakes or perhaps be stemming from my not knowing enough. Point is, you will at least know they will always have been done with the sincerity and good intentions to help people.
---If I should change my mind on some item of information, I will say so. Fact is, I have accumulated a vast knowledge, far more than most people, and I have a good and honorable sense about that information. So I will be able to speak on many topics. But when I do feel that I am speaking with regard to a field that I might not be as expert in as I would like to be, I would offer my opinion on the matter with that understanding in mind.
---I am an individual at this time of my life quite sure about many things that I know and have learned and discovered, even when it comes to things that few people in the world know about (but sometimes think they do), but always I will have an open mind and be willing to accept change on certain aspects of my thinking and what I say. And hardly will I state with surety what I am not sure about.
---You know, it's interesting, but years ago I used to think that if there were some great discovery or something or other that could save lives or whatever, it would make the headlines all over the world. It's taken me years to realize I was wrong...something I could only have realized after decades of studying the nature of how societies work and how people's minds think, and what motivates them.
---All in all, and unfortunately, it might be life-saving knowledge or whatever, but unless it's going to make money, it hardly ever gets to be really known, if at all. Once I realized that, I also realized that there were amazing things that have been presented to mankind over the ages, over hundereds of years and over the mellenium, and that have gone to the wayside for lack of financial return or other reasons not having to do with the wonderment of what had been said. In other words, I knew if I sifted through the world's knowledge I would find evidence of 'miracles' all over the place just for the taking. Of course I'd have to have the proper knowledge in order to be able to do so, to make sound judgments. And so I have acquired that knowledge for over half a century, and yes, I knew to begin doing so even as a child.
---...Fact is, it will do you well to use 'your noggin' to realize that just because you might see some amazing anouncements being made in the headlines, they didn't necessarily get there for the proper reasons, and might very well have gotten there (not always of course) for the wrong and most improper reasons, which would be reason enough to view such hedlines with a skeptical eye.
---All in all, you can be sure of one thing. What I will say will come from the heart. It will be sincere and well intentioned, and the primary underlying motive in saying what I say will always be to help people.
---Whew! Okay, I can take a breather now that I have said my peace to let you know where I'm coming from. So on to 'television nonsense' and 'media lies'!:
----------
---We seem to be having a new disease, 'acid reflux disease.' Actually, acid reflux is a condition wherein gastric contents 'regurgitate' up into the esophagus and even into the pharynx (or back of the throat) resulting in an array of symptoms primary among which is the symptom, heartburn.
---...Its cause might be any one of a number of reasons, among which incompetence of the lower esophageal sphincter is often cited as the primary cause.
---The point is, acid reflux is not usually referred to as a 'disease' per say in the usual sense of the word. To say it is a 'disease' is in a sense too harsh and could inappropriately 'tag' a person experiencing such a condition as if they be 'diseased.'
---It's almost like saying a person with a symptom such as nausea has 'nausea disease,' or with vomiting, 'vomiting disease.'
------To refer to acid reflux as a 'disease' is overkill, and anyone or any group or company promoting it as such (as a 'disease') would be suspect of doing so as a 'scare tactic' to sell more of this or that product or whatever which might have the effect to 'alleviate' or 'cure' a person of the symptoms of acid reflux when in fact such products might serve as nothing more than that which can only relieve associated symptoms, and the symptoms might not even be coming from acid reflux in the first place!
---The point is, the symptoms of acid reflux are intended to be properly evaluated by health care professionals, such as medical doctors or otherwise, and then appropriately treated if need be. Using unfounded and unscrupulous scare tactics to scare someone into buying this or that product is inexcusable and worthy of the viewer's being suspect that the company doing so is best not to be believed, for if they can present mistruth about one thing, how can you believe them about anything else they might be saying?
